#AfricaUnited FIFA World Cup 2022

FIFA World Cup 2022 kicks off in Qatar on the 20th of November. Most football activity will cease worldwide as the world turns its attention to the global showpiece that brings together 32 of the best nations for 28 days. Five countries will carry the African flag, Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia. The Football Foundation for Africa is launching a campaign, #AfricaUnited that seeks to unite Africa behind the five teams representing the continent.

Why #AfricaUnited?

The quest for African unity has proved elusive for the continent. Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, ruled his country with a dream in mind. Not content with living life the way it is, Kwame wanted to leave his mark on African politics. His idea? Nkrumah wanted to unite all of Africa under one State. What’s more, he thought of using football to make it happen.

Africa is undergoing a transformation that seeks to unify and integrate the continent to harness its full potential. Through the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, the continent seeks broader and deeper economic integration that would attract investment, boost trade, provide better jobs, reduce poverty, and increase shared prosperity in Africa. However, while AfCFTA offers the legal framework for unifying the continent, the continent remains culturally disjointed.

The #AfricaUnited campaign will be a first-of-its-kind campaign leveraging football’s unifying power and ubiquitous nature to present a united Africa, sending a strong message within and outside the continent. With the world focused on the World Cup, Africa can communicate its ambitions to unite on a global platform.

Objectives

  1. Unite Africa behind the five nations representing the continent in the competition, including an online (social media) campaign #AfricaUnited.
  2. Follow the five teams representing Africa with in-depth information about the teams and players, both past and present.
  3. Demonstrate the economic and social value of investing in football and sports by highlighting some work that has gone into preparing the teams for the World Cup.
  4. Use the opportunity to fundraise for the recently launched Africa Football for Development Network, which seeks to drive more investment into grassroots football across the continent.
